Artist Statement - "Imaginary Worlds" 2011
A work of art must evoke a feeling, or a sensation, if it is to hold
a viewer’s attention beyond a passing glance. Activity
of the mind produces a state that is both enjoyable
and beneficial to the soul. Initial curiosity, followed by the rush of a surprise
discovery brings a satisfaction that most people miss in their daily lives.
Small children experience this with much greater regularity. It keeps us youthful and
open to the unfamiliar - the knowledge that there are new things to be discovered... if we only
pay attention.
I enjoy finding forms in random marks, without any real intention or plan. The
juxtaposition and linking of images is stimulating. I strongly feel the influence of my experience
in three dimensions as I paint and draw. Understanding various shapes, and how they might fit together,
makes the outcome more believable. Throughout my life, I have done these types of images
for my own entertainment. I recently learned that this approach
had a real name all along: “automatism,” the automatic drawing of the surrealists.
The sources of the organic images that ultimately emerge in my work can be traced to my college
studies in biology, my work as a medical assistant and my life long fascination with nature.
While viewing my artwork, it is my hope that others will enjoy their own process of discovery,
and leave each piece refreshed, ready to look at the “real world" a little closer.
